Niohe
[Manchu :wolf]
Niohe dwells in the forests alongside Sahaliyen Ula (Amur River). They are meduim-sized wolves with keen sense of hearing and smell, and dark coat similar to the colour of soil, which provides them perfect camouflage in shady forest and in darkness. Usually, they live in packs consisted by a breeding pair, a Shaman, several hunters and in a fixed territory. Compared to other groups, Niohe wolves are well-known for their brutal, constant inter-pack conflicts over territory and food resources.
A Niohe wolf is depicted to be brave, proud and stubborn. They can be suprisingly grateful yet horribly revengeful at the same time.

Cinowa
[Mongolian : wolf]
Cinowa, the "horse herders", are wolves living on the grassland and forest-grassland at other side of the Hinggan Mountains. If compared to Niohe, they are slightly smaller in size and lighter in fur colour, which would enable them to hide in tall grasses without being spotted. They are also known for their stunning stamina in long chasing. Unlike Niohe, the inter-pack relationship between Cinowa packs is normally in a more cooperative atmosphere, the reason of which is probably that they live as nomads almost without territory and have to cooperate when attacking the livestock herds. Their pack Shaman is called "Bo".
Cinowa wolves are usually straightforward in action and blunt in word; while it dosen't mean that they are simple and stupid. Actually, they are brilliant strategists in open-land group hunting and can out-maneuver shepherds on horseback from time to time.

Nalok
[Hezhe: wolf]
Wolves inhabiting the bank of Ussuri River from the far East Manchuria are known as Nalok. They are also nicknamed as "the fishing wolves" by others because half of their diet is on fish. It's believed that they are sharing the same ancestry with Niohe, but they are slightly larger in size and lighter in colour. They are excellent swimmers with water-proof coat; and professional fishers that can detect the movement of a fish beneath the winter ice. They worship the Water Spirit and the Tree.
Nalok has a population much smaller than that of Niohe and Cinowa. At the beginning of the story, there were only a handful of Nalok wolves struggling to survive, some of which even wandered so far to the very west of Manchuria.

"Bear Wolves"
Wolves migrated from the other side of Amur River---in the territory of today's Russia--to Manchuria are referred to as "Kvtka Niohe" (bear wolf) or simply "Kvtka" by Niohe wolves, for they usually have heavily-built body; short ears and muzzles; and thick limbs. Their coat colour varies from common grey to silver and even pure white, which factor has them further divided into "Yacin Kvtka" (grey bear) and "Shanyan Kvtka"(white bear).
Kvtka often live as lone wolves or with other dispersals, making Manchurian wolves know almost nothing about them. Their main purpose is to attract wolves from the opposite sex so that they can have chance to start their own packs as well.
Cinowa call them "Sahvlak" ("thick fur").

Ewenk
[forest dweller]
Dholes living in the rich, dense forest of the Hinggan Mountains are sharing the same name "Ewenk" with the neighbouring human tribe. Unlike wolves, these red dogs live in clans consisted by several families, each member of which are equally cared by one another. Apart from that, they seem to have great understanding of bow to maintain the peace and balance in the forest, and are willing to do so. They are known as "the wise ones" by wolves.

Dogs
Dogs are highly diversified by their size, appearance, and usage. Unlike their wild cousins, they don't have a culture or a langauge of their own since they have already considered themselves as a part of "human pack" and yielded to whatever it offers. In this story there will be dogs of different breeds (Mongolian Sighthound; Pungsan Gae; Pekinese) and from different backgrounds (Han Chinese; Japanese; Korean), but they do share a lot in common e.g. as being more stubborn but more merciful. Besides, they tend to be more loyal to the packmates they've chosen, and will never break a promise.
